{"id":607,"date":"2018-10-24T00:33:00","date_gmt":"2018-10-24T00:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ebzbproductions.ebzb.org\/let-us-now-praise-famous-women-who-raise-us-up\/"},"modified":"2018-10-24T00:33:00","modified_gmt":"2018-10-24T00:33:00","slug":"let-us-now-praise-famous-women-who-raise-us-up","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ebzb.org\/WPress\/2018\/10\/24\/let-us-now-praise-famous-women-who-raise-us-up\/","title":{"rendered":"Let Us Now Praise Famous Women Who Raise Us Up"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div style=\"caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; margin-bottom: 1em;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The North Carolina Humanities Council\u2019s Board of Trustees selected Dr. Margaret Donovan Bauer as the recipient of the 2018&nbsp;<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nchumanities.org\/content\/caldwell-award\" style=\"color: #005596; text-decoration: none;\">John Tyler Caldwell Award for the Humanities<\/a><\/strong>, the Council\u2019s most prestigious honor.<\/span><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">The award recognizes Dr. Bauer for her lifelong achievements as a professor, editor, scholar, author, and supporter of literature in North Carolina.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"caret-color: rgb(51, 51, 51); color: #333333; margin-bottom: 1em;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;\">In a ceremony and reception, held on the evening of Friday, October 5, 2018 at the Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill, Dr Bauer used her acceptance speech to praise EbzB Productions&#8217; touring play, <i>Native<\/i>. &nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote><p>\n<span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">&#8220;When you see that play [<i>Native<\/i>] advertised in your area,&nbsp;<i>go see it<\/i>\u2014and bring a friend. If you don\u2019t see it coming to your community, bring it to your community (that\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/ebzb.org\/\" style=\"color: purple;\">ebzb.org<\/a>, for more information). This play about the collaboration between our own Paul Green, creator of&nbsp;<i>The Lost&nbsp;<\/i>Colony, and Richard Wright on adapting Wright\u2019s&nbsp;<i>Native Son<\/i>&nbsp;for the stage in the early 1940s explores conversations we should be having, not shying away from, about the American ideals that are not equally accessible to everyone, about recognizing discrimination and white privilege. It is a provocative, timely play&#8211;\u201cintense\u201d and \u201cmoving\u201d were the adjective my students used the class period after. Our audience ranged from ECU students to retirees, and we had an inspiring talk-back when it was over.&nbsp;<i>Make this happen on a stage near you.<\/i>&nbsp;I believe we all went home Tuesday night feeling more enlightened, more&nbsp;<i>empathy<\/i>&nbsp;after hearing Green and Wright try to \u201ctalk the darkness away,\u201d to borrow a phrase Green once used. Isn\u2019t that what we all need these days?
