{"id":859,"date":"2014-01-30T21:41:00","date_gmt":"2014-01-30T21:41:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ebzbproductions.ebzb.org\/bonded-through-memories-the-eatonton-messenger-eatonton-ga\/"},"modified":"2014-01-30T21:41:00","modified_gmt":"2014-01-30T21:41:00","slug":"bonded-through-memories-the-eatonton-messenger-eatonton-ga","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ebzb.org\/WPress\/2014\/01\/30\/bonded-through-memories-the-eatonton-messenger-eatonton-ga\/","title":{"rendered":"Bonded Through Memories, The Eatonton Messenger, Eatonton, GA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msgr.com\/news\/community\/article_f1f357f8-89ba-11e3-9257-0019bb2963f4.html\">http:\/\/www.msgr.com\/news\/community\/article_f1f357f8-89ba-11e3-9257-0019bb2963f4.html<\/a><\/span><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\"><br \/><\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">People from all walks of life gathered at The Plaza Arts Center Friday to share in the experience of \u201cWar Bonds: The Songs &amp; Letters of World War II.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">The musical production sent the audience reminiscing through songs and personal letters from the era.&nbsp; David zum Brunnen and Serena Ebhardt filled the stage with wartime memories and tunes, and the stories came from letters and interviews with World War II veterans.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\">Musical Director Julie Florin created wartime nostalgia through classics such as \u201cDon\u2019t Sit under the Apple Tree\u201d and \u201cBoogie Woogie Bugle Boy.\u201d <\/span> <\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\">\u201c<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif;\">These songs bring back a lot of memories,\u201d said Putnam County resident Maribel Franklin.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">As Franklin stood with her program in hand, she enthusiastically recalled the words to \u201cDon\u2019t Sit under the Apple Tree\u201d as if it had just been released.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">Not only was there excitement on stage, but there were very special guests in the audience, as well.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">Putnam County resident Bob Landau, who is helping organize a Veteran\u2019s Wall of Honor in downtown Eatonton, recognized 10 local veterans of WWII: J.T. Brock, John Griffin, George Jordan, Lloyd Kelly, Sam McLeroy, Walter Nelson, Joe Parham, the Rev. Jesse Porter, Leon Pressley and James Waller.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">Two of them \u2013 Jordan and Porter \u2013 attended the show and were applauded by the crowd.<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">An 11th WWII vet was discovered during intermission when Hilda Spurlock\u2019s nephew approached Bob Landau and asked why his aunt had not been mentioned with the others.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">The answer was simple \u2013 Landau didn\u2019t know she was a WWII vet. Spurlock immediately received the recognition she deserved: Following intermission, Landau announced the discovery and introduced her to applause from the audience.&nbsp;<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-size: x-small;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/div>\n<div style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<span style=\"font-family: Trebuchet MS, sans-serif; font-size: x-small;\">Also in the audience was Eatonton resident Helen Collins, who had her debut as a model in 1944.
