The week will also include opportunities<br \/>\n for student participation in a day of service during the Martin Luther<br \/>\nKing Jr. national holiday, and transportation for students to other area<br \/>\n events celebrating King&#8217;s life and legacy.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"display: block; float: left; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; width: 150px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" align=\"\" alt=\"Gwendolyn Boyd\" class=\"caption\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unca.edu\/sites\/default\/files\/images\/Boyd_Gwendolyn.JPG\" title=\"Gwendolyn Body\" width=\"150\" \/><span style=\"display: block;\">Gwendolyn Body<\/span><\/span>An<br \/>\n engineer, Boyd is executive assistant to the chief of staff at Johns<br \/>\nHopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, and is chair of that<br \/>\nuniversity&#8217;s Diversity Leadership Council. She was the first African<br \/>\nAmerican woman to earn a master&#8217;s degree in mechanical engineering at<br \/>\nYale, and is a past recipient of the Black Engineer of the Year Public<br \/>\nService Award. She is past president of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, a<br \/>\nservice organization of more than 200,000 women.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanying Boyd&#8217;s keynote talk will be presentations by the two<br \/>\nwinners of an oratory contest open to middle school students in<br \/>\nAsheville and Buncombe County. The two winners, both from Asheville<br \/>\nMiddle School, will talk about the meaning of Dr. King&#8217;s work in their<br \/>\nlives. This event is free and open to the public at 8 p.m. Wednesday,<br \/>\nJan. 23, in UNC Asheville&#8217;s Lipinsky Auditorium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Parchman Hour&#8221; brings to life the experiences of the freedom<br \/>\nriders through the form of a variety show.
